HOW MANY PRINTS?

Below is an attempt to track 16mm film prints as they travelled from country to country in a bid to work out a possible tally per story. Using information gathered from various sources I have built the table below, based on known documentation, bicycling routes used by other stories and likely scenarios. In some cases I have simply left the potential maximum number of prints needed to cover that story’s voyage around the globe.

For Hartnell and Troughton, I have chosen to only list the 26 stories directly affected by the junkings of the 1970s. For Pertwee I have only listed the countries which received PAL colour master tapes and have colour episodes missing. Below that are the episodes which are edited, and episodes which only exist as inferior Suppressed Field recordings.

Special thanks must once again go to Jon Preddle who helped shape this page. Please visit his BroaDWcast website for a (much) more detailed analysis.

**** DISCLAIMER – PLEASE READ ****

This is merely my attempt to join the dots and give a possible indication of what may have happened during the early years of Doctor Who’s broadcasts across the planet. This should not be taken as gospel, as only a few documented events are actually known to have happened. This is – and probably always will be – a work in progress…

BLUE denotes documentation exists to back up event
GREEN denotes supposition based on likely scenario
RED denotes fate unknown.

For Marco Polo and The Reign of Terror, only the Sierra Leone prints were Stored Field, the rest were Suppressed Field. For The Crusade, the Barbados-Jamaica-Ethiopia and Sierra Leone chains were Stored Field, the rest Suppressed Field.

From Galaxy 4 onwards, it is generally believed all BBC prints in circulation were Stored Field (the latest surviving known Suppressed Field print is The Chase 1, so unless another such print from a later episode is discovered I will consider The Time Meddler 1 as the beginning of the exclusively Stored Field era).

1983: Steve Bryant finds The Daleks' Master Plan 5 & 10 in the basement area of a former BBC building about to be occupied by a Mormon parish. It is possible these episodes had been returned from Australia in 1975, but could also have simply been ‘off the shelf’ copies at the BBC.
2004: Frances Watson returns The Daleks Master Plan 2 after he recovered it from a projection room at the BBC in the 1970s. It is possible this episode had been returned from Australia in 1975, but could also have simply been an ‘off the shelf’ copy at the BBC.

 JON PERTWEE

From Spearhead from Space onwards Doctor Who was filmed and broadcast in PAL 625-Line colour. For overseas sales, many countries were still broadcasting in black & white and so the standard telerecording service employed during the 1960s continued. For countries that broadcast in NTSC 525-Line television (such as America), the BBC would ‘standards convert’ the episodes so that the PAL serial would play on an NTSC television, and were sent 2 inch quad masters.

For the purposes of this website, 14 of the 24 Jon Pertwee stories are either partially or completely affected by missing colour instalments. Unfortunately, most of these serials were never sold in their original PAL colour format. To put it another way, to make this list a serial would have to meet two very important conditions:

* That the serial in question is missing one or more episodes in its original PAL 625-Line colour format, and
* That the overseas broadcaster purchased the serial in its original PAL 625-Line colour format

Thus, the only stories that meet these criteria are mentioned below. I have elected to mention initial broadcasts only (IE when colour masters were still around, etc).
